Along with his newest single “Swan Upon Leda”, Hozier released a statement sharing his support for women protesting basic human rights around the world. To show his solidarity he declared he was donating to several different organizations ensuring women have safe access to reproductive healthcare and urged his fans to do the same. This is not the first time Hozier has shown his support for a social movement in this way. He often uses his platform to share support for causes he believes in and will encourage his fans to do the same. So, here is a list of just a few of the many different organizations he has supported and a little about what they do:
Mayday
Mayday is an “education nonprofit” that helps to share information about abortion pills and where to access them in every state. They don’t ask for donations or personal info that can be tracked nor do they sell abortion pills or benefit from them in any way. As they say in their mission statement “We just want people to know their options”.
AidAccess
Aid Access is an organization of “doctors, activists and advocates for abortion rights”. They fight for women who do not have safe or legal access to abortion services. Should someone need abortion pills but not have legal access to them, AidAccess will ship them directly to them. According to AidAccess, “the best way you can support the work of Aid Access and the people who need an abortion, is to get abortion pills for future use (advance provision)”. They also offer another dutch non-profit organization entitled “Women on Waves” that they prefer you donate too.
Plan C
Plan C is a public health and creative campaign designed, according to their website, to “transform access to abortion in the US by normalizing the self-directed option of abortion pills by mail”. They do research and spread information regarding access to abortion pills in the US and call for universal access to abortion pills. If you want to help, the best way is to spread the word about abortion pills and share the Plan C website with people. You can also donate to their page among many other options they have listed out on their website.
ASN
ASN is the Abortion Support Network and it is an organization that helps people gain access to safe abortions. Unlike the previous organizations, this one is not just in America, it helps to support countries throughout Europe. They provide information and financial assistance to those who need to travel somewhere to receive a safe abortion. If you wish to help, you can donate at the link below:
ISPCC Childline
ISPCC, or the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, is an organization for children and they provide an array of services to “enhance the lives of children in Ireland”. They have both a call and text line for children to reach out to regarding any issue on their mind and a trained professional is there to listen and provide them with the support they need. They also have mental health services and a missing child hotline as well as several other things to support and protect children in Ireland. To get involved you can volunteer at events, host an event, and of course donate. Learn more at the link below.
MASI
MASI is the Movement of Asylum Seekers in Ireland. It is, according to their twitter bio, “a grassroots group formed by asylum seekers to campaign against Direct Provision & deportations”. They are against deportation and are working towards asylum seekers gaining the rights to work and gain an education. You can show support for their cause by donating and spreading the word about their group.
GlobalCitizen
Global Citizen is an organization that helps several different causes. On their website, they state “We take action to Defeat Poverty, Demand Equity, and Defend the Planet”. They are the organization Hozier has partnered with the most, on several different occasions for multiple of their campaigns.
The most recent being the Stand Up for Ukraine movement, a social media rally for celebrities and politicians to help “amplify the calls of advocates … to mobilize funding for refugees from Ukraine and around the world”. That call to action event alone helped to raise over $10 billion pledged in grants and loans to refugees fleeing their homes.
He also partnered with them for their One World Together at Home event that occurred during the height of the pandemic. It was a global broadcast meant to support frontline healthcare workers and the fight against Covid 19. It was a multi-hour digital broadcast and livestream that had performances from celebrities and messages and stories from frontline workers.
His biggest collaboration with Global Citizen was when he had his Cry Power Podcast, which rose about after the release of his song “Nina Cried Power”. The podcast had 9 total episodes, with each episode featuring a different inspirational artists or activist to talk “about how to change the world”. The list included Mavis Staples. Annie Lennox, Bono, Ifrah Ahmed, Marcus Mumford, and more. Listed below are several different links to organizations mentioned in the podcast and a link to the podcast itself:
